The Nellis Air Force Base Company Grade Officer Council completed its first project with Habitat for Humanity July 23, 2011, in Las Vegas, Nev.

The 23 Nellis company grade officers who participated in this project volunteered to help the four future homeowners complete two houses.

The volunteer work was extensive, but rewarding. In addition to landscaping the two houses properties, leveling out dirt and installing a sprinkling system for plants, several CGOs spent hours picking up garbage and cleaning the entire block, which will be occupied by future Habitat for Humanity houses. All together, the officers donated a total of 115 man-hours.

This was the first of what the Nellis CGOC hopes to be a long-standing relationship with Habitat for Humanity.

"The mission of CGOC is to cultivate officership in Nellis CGOs through professional development, base-wide networking, and community outreach and Habitat for Humanity gave us an opportunity to reach out to our community in a positive way" said Capt. Megan Drobotij, 99th Aerospace Medical Squadron Deployment Health Clinic public health officer in charge and CGOC president.
Habitat for Humanity provides a great public service, helping those who choose to help themselves, and Nellis CGOs plan on volunteering again for Habitat for Humanity in the future, Drobotij added.

Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas builds single family homes throughout Clark County for working families earning less than 80 percent of area median income. The homes are sold at no profit through a no-interest mortgage. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor into building Habitat homes, including the ones they will eventually purchase. Once the houses are delivered to homeowners, their monthly mortgage payments are then used to build new Habitat houses for others.
