Marking the 10th Anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 Published Aug. 18, 2011 Nellis Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The city of Las Vegas will come together to honor those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedies with a special memorial and several events, which are scheduled to take place Sept. 9-11, 2011, in various locations throughout the city. Las Vegas' events will coincide with events occurring in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. - uniting the West coast with the East coast. The purpose of these events is to enable local citizens and visitors to pay tribute to the memory of those who have fallen, the survivors and the wounded; to show commitment to the service members and first responders who wake up every day and put themselves and their families in harm's way; and to honor the civilians who become heroes themselves when they step up and help their fellow man. The chronological order of events is as follows: SEPT. 9, 2011 Car Show - "One Engine, One Injured" --- 8 a.m. - Onsite registration begins --- Noon to 6 p.m. - Car show --- Location: Fremont Street Experience and Fremont East Entertainment District --- This event is open to the public. Opening Ceremonies - "One Celebration, One Life" --- 8:30 p.m. - Opening Ceremonies begin --- Location: Fremont Street --- This event is the official kick-off of the weekend with the lighting of two light towers to simulate the World Trade Centers. Bagpipers and honor guards will be participating and live entertainment will begin immediately following the ceremony. SEPT. 10, 2011 9.11K Run/1 Mile Walk - "One Runner, One Fallen" --- 4 a.m. - Check in begins --- 6 a.m. - Run begins --- 6:30 a.m. - Walk begins --- Location: Downtown Las Vegas at both Fremont East Entertainment district and Fremont Street Experience. --- This event is limited to 3,063 runners, who will each run for a fallen victim of events on Sept. 11, 2001, and 6,000 walkers, who will each walk for each fallen military service member since the events on Sept. 11, 2001. The entry fee is $25. An effort is underway to enlist 150 Air Force personnel to run together on behalf of the personnel lost at the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. Motorcycle Memorial Run - "One Rider, One Survivor" --- 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. - Motorcycle Runs begin --- Locations: Red Rock Harley Davidson, Las Vegas Harley Davidson and Henderson Harley Davidson --- There will be five different motorcycle rides throughout Southern Nevada and Northern Arizona. All rides will finish with a run down Las Vegas Boulevard. The entry fee is $20 per rider and $15 per passenger. To register, visit www.911unity.org. Family Equestrian Day at Horseman Park (Flamingo Arena) --- 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. - Grand entry and Equestrian showcase, ceremonies and performances --- All Day - Event zone: pony rides, mechanical bull, rock wall, petting zoo, carriage rides, demonstrations, vendor village, etc. Family Equestrian Day at Horseman Park (Main Arena) --- 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Rodeo Events --- 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. - Entertainment SEPT. 11, 2011 Heroes Parade --- 5:46 a.m. Event begins the moment the first tower was hit on Sept. 11, 2001, with a moment of silence and ringing of the bells in New York City at Ground Zero. --- 6 a.m. - Parade begins --- Location: 4th Street parade route --- This event will include first responders, military, honor guards, bagpipers and other special performances. An official Sept. 11, 2001, memorial ceremony will also be held at 11:11 a.m. at Police Memorial Park led by Sheriff Gillespie of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
