The area known as “Hill Field” prior to the installation’s name change in 1948 became colloquially known as ‘the east area’ following the addition of the former Ogden Arsenal’s real property holding (which became known as ‘the west area’) to Hill AFB in 1955. This photograph, taken in the late 1950s, shows the recently added runway and the controversial Wherry Housing (bottom right of photo, just east by few hundred feet of the new runway).
