It is important to know disasters can strike at any time, so it is vital to plan how to get to a safe place, how to make contact with separated loved ones, and how to meet back together. According to Ready.gov, it is important to identify an emergency contact, such as a friend or relative who lives out-of-state, as a point of contact. It may be easier to make a long-distance phone call than trying to call across town during a disaster. Ready.gov also states, every family member should know the phone number of the family’s emergency contact, and has either a cell phone, change for a pay phone or prepaid phone card to use, if needed.
