DACHAU, Germany – The gate leading into the concentration camp. The camp was designed to hold 6,000 prisoners, but by 1944, approximately 30,000 prisoners were held there. Eventually the camp grew to include subcamps located in southern Germany and Austria. The United States military entered Dachau April 29, 1945, and found thousands of emaciated prisoners and train cars filled with dead bodies. More than 200,000 prisoners were registered at the camp, and thousands of others were not registered at all. There is no way to determine how many people were imprisoned there and how many died.
