Gone but not forgotten: Nellis honors POWs, those MIA
A trio of F-16 Fighting Falcons perform the “missing man” formation during the Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Recognition Ceremony at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., Sept. 18, 2015. The missing man formation is an aerial salute to those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. A position in the formation is vacant to represent that one person is missing, just like so many of the nation’s heroes that have gone missing in the fight for America’s freedom. GPS: Twenty years of positioning, navigation, timing
On July 17, 1995, the U.S. Air Force announced the Global Positioning System had reached full operational capability. GPS began as a military technology proving it’s capabilities in 1990 and 1991 during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and were relied on heavily by allied troops to navigate the featureless deserts in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq. Since then, GPS technology has been integrated into most areas of modern life. There are approximately four billion GPS-enabled devices worldwide. The eighth-mile running track allows Airmen and dependents to work out in a temperature-controlled environment at the Warrior Fitness Center April 12, 2012, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Specially coated windows in the Warrior Fitness Center block ultraviolet rays in sunlight from entering the gym and creating excess heat, greatly reducing the energy needed for cooling. The gym's windows are placed so that they receive the least possible amount of direct UV rays, while special exterior facing materials and insulation passively cool the building without using additional energy. Grilling: prevent damage and injury by keeping it safe
Every summer, people across the country get out their grills to barbeque food. Along with this fun tradition comes many potential fire and other safety hazards. According to the National Fire Protection Association, gas grills constitute a higher fire risk and between 2007 and 2011, they were involved in an annual average of 7,200 home fires. In December 2012, ESPN SportsCenter anchor Hannah Storm was badly burned while grilling. The NFPA website stated Storm suffered first and second-degree burns on her face, neck, chest and hands when she attempted to re-ignite a flame after the wind had blown it out and caused propane gas to pool and become an explosion hazard. The NFPA suggests these safety tips: propane gas and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets away from the grill area. Never leave your grill unattended. (U.S. Air Force photo illustration by Airman 1st Class Thomas Spangler)
