Royal Australian Air Force Flight Lieutenant Melanie Smyth, an aviation medical officer assigned to the 2nd Expeditionary Health Squadron, put her years of emergency first aid training to good use Feb. 3, when she responded to a child choking at a shopping center near the Las Vegas Strip. Smyth, one of hundreds of coalition military partners temporarily assigned to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, in support of Red Flag 19-1, was enjoying her day off in the city when she noticed a mother in panic as her six-year-old daughter lost the ability to breathe.
