NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev.-- A U.S. Army pallbearer team transfers the remains of Army Sgt. Ken Hermogino, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., May 21, 2011. Sergeant Hermogino died May 9 in Herat province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related vehicle accident. Sergeant Hermogino graduated from Basic High School in Las Vegas in 1998 and, prior to transitioning to the U.S. Army in 2009, he served eight years in the U.S. Air Force as a medical administrator. Ken Hermogino departs Nellis Air Force Base following a dignified transfer ceremony here May 21, 2011. Sergeant Hermogino died May 9 in Herat province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related vehicle accident. Sergeant Hermogino graduated from Basic High School in Las Vegas in 1998 and, prior to transitioning to the U.S. Army in 2009, he served eight years in the U.S. Air Force as a medical administrator. Defending Freedom Memorial dedication
LAS VEGAS -- The Defending Freedom Memorial is located at the Red Rock National Conservation Area in Las Vegas. The memorial was initially dedicated in 2005 and is comprised of seven sandstones with the engraved names of Nevada's fallen servicemen and women. In 2011, the names Nellis Airmen Senior Airman Michael Buras, Staff Sgt. David Smith, 1st Lt. Joel Gentz and Capt. David Wisniewski were added to the memorial. NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev.-- Airmen render salutes as a a hearse carrying U.S. Army Sgt. Ken Hermogino departs Nellis Air Force Base following a dignified transfer ceremony here May 21. Sergeant Hermogino died May 9 in Herat province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related vehicle accident. The son of a retired U.S. Navy senior chief petty officer, Sergeant Hermogino graduated from Basic High School in Las Vegas in 1998 and, prior to transitioning to the U.S. Army in 2009, he served eight years in the U.S. Air Force as a medical administrator. Sergeant Hermogino was assigned to the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
