George Brawerman, former U.S. Army combat engineer, was captured in Germany during World War II and held prisoner. Mr. Brawerman and many other prisoners of war and service members missing in action were recognized during the National Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Day ceremony Sept. 16, 2011, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. The National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed across the nation on the third Friday of September each year.
