Grilling: prevent damage and injury by keeping it safe

Every summer, people across the country get out their grills to barbeque food. Along with this fun tradition comes many potential fire and other safety hazards. According to the National Fire Protection Association, gas grills constitute a higher fire risk and between 2007 and 2011, they were involved in an annual average of 7,200 home fires. In December 2012, ESPN SportsCenter anchor Hannah Storm was badly burned while grilling. The NFPA website stated Storm suffered first and second-degree burns on her face, neck, chest and hands when she attempted to re-ignite a flame after the wind had blown it out and caused propane gas to pool and become an explosion hazard. The NFPA suggests these safety tips: propane gas and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets away from the grill area. Don't risk it, avoid being a statistic

As summer temperatures soar into the high 100s, vacations and road trips are becoming more necessary in order to escape the blistering heat. It is important to remember to be fully prepared before driving any kind of distance. According to the National Highway Traffic safety Administrations website, even well-maintained vehicles can break down. Before getting on the road it is important to check the vehicles fluids, tires, and lights to make sure it is safe to drive. It is also important to make sure all the necessary items are available in order to ensure a safe trip such as; an emergency phone, first aid kit, spare tire and a full tank of gas. Sports bring esprit de corps to Nellis community

Intramural sports are a good way to take control of one’s fitness. Participating in intramural sports offers active duty, dependents and retirees the opportunity to compete with other members of the Nellis community. There are currently five coed intramural sports offered annually; flag football, basketball, softball, golf as well as volleyball. Swimming safety serious every single summer

Airmen are reminded to take all precautionary swimming safety steps prior to jumping in the pool, lake or ocean this summer. According to the National Safety Council, preparation is important for all sporting activities, but especially for swimming since drowning accounts for approximately 3,500 deaths every year. Airmen should also refrain from swimming intoxicated as alcohol can affect judgment and body temperature, impairing one’s ability to swim. Nellis to add another large solar plant

The solar photovoltaic power system at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., is the largest solar photovoltaic array in the United States. There are plans to expand the 14-megawatt solar power production at the base. The Air Force recently signed a lease with Nevada Energy to add a 19-megawatt solar array. Boating in style:Life jackets save lives

Airmen are reminded to wear a life jacket while operating or riding on personal watercraft to help increase their risk of survival in case of an emergency. According to the Personal Flotation Device Manufacturers Association, nine out of ten drowning’s occur in inland waters, most within a few feet of safety and involving boats under 20 feet long. Most drowning victims also had a life jacket available and chose not to wear it. Airmen should not drink and operate personal watercraft and can be charged for driving under the influence or speeding while out on the water. Be Safe this Fourth of July

With the Fourth of July weekend right around the corner, many people are making plans to celebrate with their friends and families. While having fun is important, it is paramount to keep safety as the number one priority. The National Safety Council in Itasca, Ill. warns the combination of alcohol, fireworks and driving can be a recipe for disaster. Stay alive: If you drink don't drive

Airmen are reminded not to drink and drive this summer due to the illegality and safety concerns. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, an estimated 32 percent of fatal car crashes involve an intoxicated driver or pedestrian. Airmen who receive a DUI are subject to punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Article 111, drunken or reckless operation of vehicle, aircraft, or vessel. Always remember 0-0-1-3, zero underage drinking offenses, zero drinking and driving incidents, one drink per hour, and three drinks maximum per evening.
