Nellis pays respects to fallen Soldier
NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev.-- Airmen render salutes as a a hearse carrying U.S. Army Sgt. Ken Hermogino departs Nellis Air Force Base following a dignified transfer ceremony here May 21. Sergeant Hermogino died May 9 in Herat province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related vehicle accident. The son of a retired U.S. Navy senior chief petty officer, Sergeant Hermogino graduated from Basic High School in Las Vegas in 1998 and, prior to transitioning to the U.S. Army in 2009, he served eight years in the U.S. Air Force as a medical administrator. Sergeant Hermogino was assigned to the 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. He will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City. (U.S. Air Force photo/Senior Airman Brett Clashman)

Nellis pilot in F-16C mishap identified
U.S. Air Force Capt. Eric Ziegler poses for a photo during one of his three combat deployments. Officials identified Captain Ziegler, 30, an operational test and evaluation instructor pilot with the 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, as the pilot involved in an aircraft mishap near Caliente, Nev., June 28, 2011. Captain Ziegler was an experienced pilot with over 1,200 flight hours, primarily in the F-16 Fighting Falcon, with operational assignments at Kunsan Air Base, Korea; Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany; and Nellis AFB, Nev. During those assignments, he flew more than 300 combat hours on three deployments. His decorations include the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and an Aerial Achievement Medal. Maintenance and support personnel move an F-16 out from under a collapsed structure at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Sept. 9, 2011. A canopy which provides protection from the elements collapsed when a microburst, a sudden, violent downdraft of air over a small area; hit the base at approximately 5 p.m. Sept. 8. Eight military members received minor injuries and were treated at the Mike O?Callahan Federal Hospital and all have been released. In addition to the injured military personnel, vehicles in the area as well as the walls and the concrete pad holding the structure were also damaged. Thirteen aircraft, including 11 F-16s and two A-10s, were in individual bays were under the structure at the time of the incident. Nellis remembers POWs, those MIA
William Dean Whitaker, a World War II veteran and former prisoner of war, shares a story with Col. Thomas E. Dempsey III, Nevada Test and Training Range commander, during the Prisoner of War and Missing in Action Recognition Ceremony at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., Sept. 19, 2014. Whitaker, who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps’ 603rd Bomb Squadron as a bombardier and navigator, was completing a mission over Merseburg, Germany when his B-17 was shot down on Nov. 2, 1944, and was subsequently held as a POW for seven months. Nellis Satellite Pharmacy reopens
The satellite pharmacy reopened Mar. 26, 2012 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., allowing patients needing pharmaceutical refills an alternative to the main Mike O'Callaghan Federal Medical Center Pharmacy. Dependents and military retirees filling off-base prescriptions are encouraged to use the satellite pharmacy as their primary location to fill prescriptions on base. The satellite pharmacy is open to patients Monday- Friday from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Having a second pharmacy choice on base means faster service for patients at both pharmacy locations. Nellis spouse, Christina Hillard, was recently named winner of the short video competition on the official Year of the Air Force Family website, MyAirForceLife.com. She is the wife of Tech. Sgt. Christopher Hillard from the 57th Maintenance Group, and won the award for her short video, “What A Ride.”

Nellis Tax Center offers help with tax preparation
The Nellis Tax Center will open Jan. 30, 2014, at the Desert Oasis Lounge at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Free tax advice and assistance will be provided to active-duty service members, retirees and families possessing a valid military identification card. The tax center will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. until Feb. 3 when the hours change from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursdays. This schedule will remain in effect until April 15, the final day to file income tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service. No appointments are necessary, only walk-ins will be taken.
