Airmen's Center receives fresh start

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. --  At the end of a long work day when there is nothing pressing to do, head over to the newly renovated Airmen's Center.

The Airmen's Center, near the dorms, received a new face lift March 15 in order to improve the place where Airmen come to relax after work.

"The purpose of this remodel is to kind of give new life to the Airmen's Center," said Airman 1st Class Brant Sylvester, 99th Contracting Squadron contractor. "Over the past few years it has become neglected and rundown."

With the help of the Nellis Area Spouses Club and Airmen to support the idea, the remodel was approved by wing leadership.

"[Members of] the Nellis Area Spouses Club saw the need of an update, when they sponsored an Airmen's Center Dorm Dinner a few months ago," said Megan Markling, wife of Air Force 1st Lt. Matthew Markling, 99th CONS contractor. "The Nellis Area Spouses Club joined forces with the 99th ABW Command Chief Cleveland, his staff and the dorm management team, in hopes to give the Airmen a nice place to retreat to after duty hours."

New items such as a billiards table, couches, bar stools and a fresh coat of decorative paint were all put in with the new update.

"We tried to keep everything the Airmen liked about the current set up and add items that they wanted as improvements," Markling said.

With the Air Force experiencing budget cuts, all of the items were paid for by donations.
"The money was a donation from the Nellis Area Spouses Club," Markling said. "[We] raise funding through the Nellis Area Spouses Thrift Shop."

With the remodel to the Airmen's Center complete, Airmen can now enjoy the new updates that have been made.

"I believe that more Airmen will use the Airmen's Center now that it is secured, thoroughly cleaned and updated," Sylvester said.
