The annual Las Vegas Corporate Challenge concluded June 16 revealing Nellis as it's grand winner for the forth year in a row.

Corporate Challenge is modeled after the Olympic Games and is one of the largest amateur sports events in Southern Nevada. Local businesses compete within divisions of companies of similar size. Nellis was part of division 'A' along with 15 other organizations listing more than 2,000 employees.

This year's corporate challenge consisted of 33 competitions ranging from tug-o-war and archery to poker and bowling, and lasted 12 weeks. Since the games first began in 1986, Nellis has won the challenge nine times.

"The challenge gives [Nellis employees] a chance to get in shape, both mentally and physically. It helps with the relationship with downtown and builds morale and teamwork," said Mike Clegg, director of Nellis Outdoor Recreation and Corporate Challenge coordinator.

About 450 Nellis personnel participated and volunteered at the challenge this year placing first in table tennis, track & field, indoor volleyball, bike race, sand volleyball, darts, racquetball and softball events, second in seven other challenges and sixth or above in 12 more. Team Nellis has also won the first place in the blood drive, which was part of the event as well.

"It is definitely not a one-man show," said Mr. Clegg. This has been the seventh Corporate Challenge in which he organized Nellis' participation and he expressed his deep appreciation for those who volunteered their time and abilities to make this victory a reality.

Volunteers were crucial to Nellis' victory this year, earning 22 bonus points and putting the team at a 6.1 point lead.

Registration for 2008 Corporate Challenge will start March 1. Registration forms will be available at the base gym and the youth center. Team Nellis will once again need three to four hundred participants.
