Nellis Tax Center offers help with tax preparation Published Jan. 16, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Thomas Spangler 99th Air Base Wing Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- With the tax season here, tax preparation and assistance services will be offered to all active-duty service members, retirees and military family members who possess a valid military identification card. The center will be located at the Desert Oasis Lounge ballroom in building 324. The tax center opens Jan. 30, and will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. until Feb. 3 when the hours change from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursdays. This schedule will remain in effect until April 15, which is the final day people can file their income tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service. The tax center staff will see walk-ins only on a first come first serve basis. A greeter will make sure people seeking assistance have all of their necessary documents in order before they see a counselor. The following documents are needed to file taxes: · Verification of social security number (social security card, or another document from the social security administration with the SSN on it). · A valid photo identification · Proof of income on W-2s or 1099s. · Proof of any deductions or expenses that wished to be claimed. More than 20 Airmen from Nellis AFB have volunteered to help people seeking assistance with their taxes. "I am very excited to help my fellow Airmen," said Airman 1st Class Justine Karevites, United States Air Force Warfare Center paralegal. To ensure that these Airmen know how to properly fill out and file the forms, they received four and a half days of training from an IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program instructor. At the end of the training, they were officially certified by the VITA program to voluntarily help people file their taxes. Although tax assistance will be made available to all active-duty service members, retirees and their families, the tax center staff would like to see younger Airmen take advantage of the tax assistance provided for free. "This year we are primarily focusing on E-1s through E-5s, O-1s, O-2s, and retirees who don't have access to any other option; however, tax assistance will be available to all active-duty military members retirees and families regardless of rank," said Capt. Lindsay Cronin, USAFWC assistant staff judge advocate. Appointments are not required, however please call ahead to ensure that volunteers are present. The number is 702-679-0555.
