Sports bring esprit de corps to Nellis community Published July 16, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Rachel Loftis 99th Air Base Wing Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- Nellis is home to the 110,000 square-foot Warrior Fitness Center which offers a wide variety of fitness equipment, group exercises, as well as the favored intramural sports programs. The Warrior Fitness Center currently offers five intramural sports annually. These sports include flag football, basketball, softball, golf and volleyball. All sports are coed and active duty, dependents, and retirees are eligible to participate. Intramural sports offer participants the opportunity to compete with other members of the Nellis community in a competitive sport setting while simultaneously creating esprit de corps within the teams. If an eligible person wishes to join an intramural sports team they simply need to speak to their unit's representative to learn about the different ways to participate. Not every group or squadron will have a team to play intramural sports. If that is the case, participation is still possible, but the participants will be required to join the player's pool which is a list of single players willing to play on any team. "I like sports," said Senior Airman Jonathan Mook, 99th Comptroller Squadron, budget technician. "We do sports once a month with my squadron, as well as the intramural sports. I really like just getting out there and playing. It doesn't really matter whose team I am on." For the really ambitious there is also the opportunity to create a team. All squadrons, or squadron level organizations, are eligible to create their own team. In order to do so, there are requirements that must be met. "Before each season a letter of intent is sent to all squadrons on base," said Lawrence Bridges, sports director for the Warrior Fitness Center. "The purpose of the letter is for the squadron to declare their intent on participating in the league. Those wishing to take part are required to send the coach to a mandatory coaches meeting where all rules are discussed and suggestions are voiced." Intramural Sports offers an optional way to take control of one's fitness. "I go out to play and have a good time," Mook said. "For me going out and playing sports is my preferred choice of exercise. So, anytime I can get out and play basketball or volleyball or any kind of sport I would rather do that than lifting weights. I feel a lot more accomplishment and satisfaction than just going to the gym and running on the treadmill." "There are many rewarding factors to participate such as fun teamwork and competition as well as the opportunity for families to come watch," Bridges said.
