Lomie G. Heard Elementary School faculty looking forward to new school year Published Aug. 26, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Mikaley Towle 99th Air Base Wing Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- Classes at Lomie G. Heard Elementary School here resumed Aug. 25, and parents can breathe a sigh of relief knowing their kids are staying safe, socializing with their peers, and having fun in school all day. Teachers at LGH Elementary School have an extensive knowledge of their lesson plans and the school has an active Parent Teacher Association with members who plan exciting monthly events. The school's goal is for all of its students to have a successful year, said Pamela Goynes-Brown, assistant principal at LGH Elementary School. "Our most important goal for the 2014-2015 school year is to increase student achievement across the board," said Goynes-Brown. "Across the board means showing growth in all our sub-groups; this means all ethnicities, special education groups, and free and reduced lunch groups." By sharing data from the previous year, teachers could focus more on the areas that students were struggling in, said Goynes-Brown. The school also implemented the Nevada Academic Content Standards program. "I'm excited for school to start, and I have kids returning from last year," said Terri Graunitz, an Early Childhood Special Education pre-school teacher at LGH Elementary School. "I just couldn't wait to get the kids back and get the ball rolling. I'm really excited for the family involvement activities with the PTA, such as movie, pizza and restaurant nights." The start of the new school year means meeting new families, familiarizing them with the families already here, and another chance to increase overall student performance and growth, said Goynes-Brown. "We are doing the best we can to take care of children on a daily basis while they are here at LGH Elementary School," said Goynes-Brown. "We our doing our best to provide them with a quality education because we know our kids come from all over the world, and that when they do leave us they can say they received a top-notch education here at Clark County School District and Lomie G. Heard Elementary School."
