Col. Steve Garland, 99th Air Base Wing commander, and his wife Paula hosted storytime for military dependants April 6 at the base library in order to raise awareness for National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Every year since 1983, United States presidents have signed proclamations declaring April to be National Child Abuse Prevention Month, encouraging awareness of child abuse and recommitting state resources to programs promoting community involvement. President Barack Obama continued this tradition of raising awareness by signing the 2011 proclamation in a ceremony March 31 at the White House.

Nellis leadership also enacted several programs to be put into place to raise awareness of child abuse prevention in the Nellis community, including hosting storytime for children each Wednesday in April.

Throughout the rest of the year, Family Advocacy offers classes in areas such as stress and anger management, relationship enhancement and parenting.
