Airman's Attic extends support to more enlisted Published Aug. 14, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Timothy Young 99th Air Base Wing Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The Airman's Attic extended its services to all active-duty enlisted military members E-5 or below and their families here Aug. 1. The Airman's Attic adjusted its rank limits in order to support a larger number of military members on base and to be consistent with other bases' Airmen's Attics. According to Ellen Reynolds, airman and family readiness center community readiness consultant, the Airman's Attic serves approximately 550 customers per month. The Airman's Attic receives gently used household items such as furniture, appliances and baby items and makes them available for free to every active-duty military branch members. "Donated uniforms are accessible to every rank," Reynolds said. "Other ranks are authorized to shop at the attic if requested by the member's first sergeant and approved by the airman and family readiness center." Customers are authorized nine small items and one large item each month. A large item may include matching furniture pieces, washers and dryers, dining sets, etc. Because the Airman's Attic does not receive money for any of these items, it does not have the option of hiring paid employees and is run by volunteers who are responsible for opening up the store to one-time volunteers. Reynolds said they receive between 25 and 30 volunteers each month dedicated to running the Airman's Attic. "We are here for our military community," said Kriston Oberg, a regular volunteer at the Airman's Attic. "We want them to come back and feel welcome here." The Airman's Attic relies entirely on donations to fill its shelves. "It doesn't matter if it is a big or small donation; it all adds up," said Terriann Burnett, a regular volunteer at the Airman's Attic. "Our shelves are barer then they have ever been." People who wish to donate have the option of dropping donations off at one of the bins behind Bldg. 601 at any time or bringing them inside the building during hours of operation. Anyone interested in receiving a receipt for a donation must come by during work hours and speak to a volunteer. The Airman's Attic is located on the south side of the commissary and is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
