820th RED HORSE constructs new fire station Published May 20, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Jake Carter 99th Air Base Wing Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The 820th RED HORSE has been constructing a new fire station on the housing side of base. The project is scheduled for completion on July 1 and the fire station will be fully operational by July 15. The planning process and design for the 5,000 square foot fire station dates back to 2012 when RED HORSE was given the approval by the 99th Civil Engineer Squadron to build the new facility. "[99th] Civil Engineer Squadron came to us with a requirement for a new fire station," said Master Sgt. Hans Flammang, RED HORSE project manager. "They told us it needed to hold [one fire truck], five people, for 24 hour shifts." Nellis originally had a fire station on housing side of base before housing privatized. The construction of new base housing caused the shut-down of the old fire station. "We originally had a fire station back in the late 90's, and when the housing area privatized, it became a privatized operation," said Mike Boley, 99th CES flight fire chief. "We lost our fire station here, it took over 10 years but RED HORSE finally stepped up to the plate with funding and was able to build a fire station for us." With the housing side of base now having a fire station, the response time for an emergency will be much faster. "We provide structural fire fighting to the local North Las Vegas community and on this side of the base," Boley said. "The main reason the fire station is [on the housing side] is because we can't meet response times from main base, so that's what drove this stations requirement." With the new addition of the satellite fire station to the base, it provides RED HORSE Airmen a way to train before being deployed down range. RED HORSE specializes in constructing buildings, roadways, and concrete walkways, but also train and specialize in electrical. "Without projects like this, we would not be able to provide the training needed to do our mission down range," Flammang said. "If we don't get these projects, as valuable as they are, we wouldn't be able to do our mission."
