Airmen are reminded to take all precautionary swimming safety steps prior to jumping in the pool, lake or ocean this summer. According to the National Safety Council, preparation is important for all sporting activities, but especially for swimming since drowning accounts for approximately 3,500 deaths every year. Airmen should also refrain from swimming intoxicated as alcohol can affect judgment and body temperature, impairing one’s ability to swim. Children must also be closely monitored around the water, because one in five drowning victims are children 14 years old and younger. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Siuta B. Ika)
