Nellis Airmen competed in the Warrior Fitness Center's Intramural Golf Championship at the Sunrise Vista Golf course here Aug. 12.

The intramural golf season started off in full-force in April with 15 teams competing to be one of the final two teams selected to play in the championship match.

The final two teams who squared off in the 18-hole match were the 99th Civil Engineer Squadron and the 57th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.

The 57th AMXS executed a fast start in an attempt to defend their 2013 championship title. The team birdied the first two holes; however, the 99th CES came back and drew even on holes three, four and five.

As the game progressed, the 99th CES won holes six, seven and eight to win the front nine by one point.

"This was one of the most exciting matches in recent memory," said Larry Bridges, 99th Force Support Squadron sports director.

As the end of the game drew near in the next seven holes, the 99th CES and the 57th AMXS drew even on the scoreboard, leaving a nail-biting last two holes.

"During the last two holes of the match the 57th AMXS barely missed on two putts that lipped out on holes 17 and 18, that could have forced a playoff," Bridges said

The 99th CES took this opportunity to birdie the 18th hole, ending the neck-and-neck competition and won the 2014 base championship title.

"It feels gratifying to have a goal and achieve it [the championship title]. Our competitors were by far the toughest matchup we've had all season. My teammates and I want to thank the 99th FSS for managing the season and we hope they bring it back next year," said Senior Airman Kevin Carroll, 99th CES power production specialist and member of the championship team.

Intramural golf has been played at Nellis for the past 40 years. To sign up for the league or for more information on the intramural sports program, contact the Warrior Fitness Center at 702-652-4891.
