Ika 99th Air Base Wing Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The upcoming Labor Day weekend marks the end of the 2014 Critical Days of Summer campaign, which began during Memorial Day weekend in May. The annual CDOS campaign is aimed at reducing the increased number of mishaps that traditionally occur Air Force-wide during the summer months. "The goal is to instill effective risk-management methods in our personnel to use in their everyday strategy, on- or off-duty," said Tech. Sgt. Ramone Hayes, 99th Air Base Wing ground safety manager. "So far this year, [at Nellis] we've had 38 mishaps. Last year we had 52 total - that's a 26 percent decrease - so we're doing pretty good we just need to keep it up." Of the 38 mishaps this year, Hayes said 14 were 'industrial' mishaps, or mishaps occurring while on the job, which would account for more than any other category of mishap. "Last year, there were 23 industrial mishaps, which were the most of any kind of mishap as well," Hayes said. "We really want to emphasize occupational safety. Critical Days of Summer focuses a lot on off-duty time; however, we can't lose sight of our on-duty requirements. When you're on the job, you need to be doing everything by the book and utilizing all [personal protection equipment] requirements to keep yourself safe." Although the CDOS campaign may be coming to an end, focusing on safety throughout the year needs to be a priority for everyone, said Col. Richard Boutwell, 99th ABW commander. "I always emphasize that it only takes one Airman doing an ordinary act to have an extraordinary impact in someone else's life, and that definitely applies to safety," Boutwell said. "Summer, fall, winter or spring, a lapse in judgment can happen to anyone at any time, so it's imperative we all look out for each other. As you all enjoy this time off with your loved ones, reflect on some of the lessons we've learned, so when we come back, we can knock down those mishap numbers even more."
