The National Drug Take Back Day will be held at the Exchange here from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 26 and 27.

During National Drug Take Back Day, the 99th Medical Group and 99th Security Forces Squadron collaborate to collect unused or expired medications in an effort to reduce drug abuse, poisoning, and aiding in the practice of proper disposal.

"The take back day is a fantastic way to safely dispose of any unwanted or expired medications that people no longer use or need," said Capt. [Dr.] Tyler G. Bolanz, 99th Medical Support Squadron pharmacist.

During the event, any prescribed tablets, capsules, inhalers, topical ointments, eye drops or liquids will be accepted for turn in. Over-the-counter medications will also be accepted, however, syringes and sharp items [needles, insulin vials, and sharps containers] will not.

"Drug take back day is a great initiative to keep unneeded and expired medications out of the hands of those whom they could harm or those for whom they are not intended," said Capt. [Dr.] Chad Rounds, 99th MDSS pharmacist. "We have collected hundreds of pounds of medications over the years and take pride in keeping our base and community safe."

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, 780,158 pounds, or 390 tons, of pills were brought to the 6,072 collection sites the DEA and its 4,423 state, local, and tribal law enforcement partners set up in April. When added to what was collected at previous DEA-coordinated take-back events, 4.1 million pounds, or 2,123 tons, of prescription medications have been removed from circulation.

Airmen are encouraged to participate in the National Drug Take Back Day to help reduce the chances of a family member or friend abusing medication, of a child mistaking medication for candy, or a person misdiagnosing themselves or others and taking an incorrect medication, which could lead to accidental poisoning or even death.
