Nellis Open House returns Nov. 8-9 Published Oct. 8, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Rachel Loftis 99 Air Base Wing Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The Nellis AFB Open House will return to Nevada Nov. 8 and 9. The 2014 Open House celebrates the 21st century Air Force and its accomplishments in air, space and cyberspace. Several military aerial demonstration teams, including the U.S. Air Force Aerial Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds, will participate. "The purpose of hosting an air show is to expose the local community to the missions the Air Force continues to execute each and every day," said Col. Richard Boutwell, 99th Air Base Wing commander. The two-day event will depict the history of American aviation and salute recent accomplishments of America's military in operations around the globe through numerous military and civilian ground displays. "The public will get to see the evolution of aviation," said Boutwell. "If you think about it in historical terms, they will get to see how aviation developed and grew to what it is today." Numerous aircraft representing America's aviation history will be on display alongside some of the nation's newest military aircraft, such as the P-51 Mustang, B-1 Lancer, F-22 Raptor and many others. "For the public tax payers, this is their opportunity to get to see the equipment, the mission, as well as the history firsthand," said Bob Jones, Open House director. "There is going to be a lot of excitement, a lot of equipment in the air and a lot of fun. The greatest thing is, it's all free. " Attendees will have the opportunity to meet some of the personnel and see aircraft that have recently supported military operations around the world. The open house also acts as the final air show of the year for the Thunderbirds. "The main thing we want to do is invite the public into our home, and Nellis is certainly proud to be a neighbor of all the Las Vegas communities," said Boutwell. "It is our opportunity to show to the public, the roles and missions they hold us accountable for and to showcase what the Air Force is doing for them." General admission and public parking at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is free. There will be free round-trip shuttle bus transportation to and from Nellis AFB. The Open House schedule is as follows: 10:00 a.m.: Buses start/gates open 11:00 a.m.: Opening ceremony 11:15 a.m.: Start of flying show 3:45 p.m.: Flying show complete 4:30 p.m.: Gates close For the latest information on the Open House, visit the Open House page at www.nellis.af.mil/aviationnation or call the 99th Air Base Wing Public Affairs office at 702-652-2750.
