Bundle up for colder weather properly Published Oct. 10, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Mikaley Towle 99th Air Base Wing Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- With cooler weather descending upon Southern Nevada, service members must remember to bundle up for the changing temperatures. Although staying warm is important, members must remember to do so appropriately and in accordance with Air Force Instruction 36-2903, Dress and Personal Appearance of Air Force Personnel, and determine when it's appropriate to wear certain clothing items while in uniform. "The sage green fleece cap may be worn in the Airman Battle Uniform when cold weather outer garments are worn or with Physical Training gear," said Chief Master Sgt. Steven Cleveland, 99th Air Base Wing command chief. "If the weather outside doesn't warrant wearing it, then it shouldn't be worn. Airmen are not authorized to wear the sage green fleece indoors, however, a unit commander may authorize the wear of the fleece indoors if mission needs dictate." Cleveland said an example of a mission that may justify the requirement to wear the fleece indoors is working within a hanger or a poor climate-controlled warehouse. According to AFI 36-2903, gloves may be worn with all authorized outer garments, but must be all one color, leather, knitted, tricot or suede, or a combination of leather, knitted, tricot and suede. Black or sage green gloves may be worn with the ABU, flight duty uniform and all authorized outer garments to the ABU or FDU. Only black gloves may be worn with the service dress uniform and when wearing approved outer garments with the blue service and service dress uniforms. "Just because Airmen can buy it at clothing sales doesn't mean it's authorized," Cleveland said. "Bottom line is, if you have a question, you need to consult AFI 36-2903. If you cannot find the answer, elevate your question through your chain of command."
