LEAD program to speak to Airmen about attending USAF Academy Published Oct. 28, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Thomas Spangler 99 Air Base Wing/Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- Young Airmen in the local area seeking a commission through the U.S. Air Force Academy will be given the opportunity to gather information during a briefing and open forum Nov. 4 and 8, respectively. These events will give those interested the opportunity to meet Academy graduates, learn about the Academy and what it takes to gain admission and succeed once accepted. A briefing will be held Nov. 4 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Base Theater and the open forum will take place Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Boulder Station Casino. There will also be an information booth on base during the Nellis Open House Nov. 8 and 9. The program Airmen will be working through is called the Leaders Encouraging Airman Development program. Representatives of this program will be available to answer any questions Airmen may have about the program and the Academy. Airmen who are seeking a commission not only have the chance to accelerate their career, but change their career path if they choose to. "If [the Airman wants] to fly, the academy gets a number of the pilot slots every year," said Capt. Amanda McFeeters, U.S. Air Force Advanced Maintenance and Munitions Operations School instructor and 2007 U.S. Air Force Academy graduate. "If they want to go into medicine, they can get their degree and then get picked up for a doctorate program." · Airmen who are interested in attending the Academy must meet the following criteria: · Airmen from any enlisted rank must be academically qualified, of high moral character, and possess exceptional leadership potential · Airmen will not be over the age of 23 on the Academy July 1, 2015 in-processing date. · Airmen may not have dependents and must be a U.S. citizen upon entering the Academy. · Airmen are encouraged to retake the Scholastic Aptitude Test and/or the American College Test to make sure the most recent scores are submitted for application. · In addition, Airmen must complete an Air Force Form 1786 with their commander's recommendation. The completed form must be submitted to the Admissions Office no later than Dec. 31, 2014. In addition to the above criteria, the Academy admissions website states that admissions personnel will also consider the applicant's enlisted performance as well as recommendations from supervisors.
