Air Force officials recently announced the 99th Air Base Wing was selected as an Outstanding Unit Award recipient for the thirteenth time in its history for its accomplishments during the period of June 1, 2013, to May 31, 2014.

The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award is awarded to units that have outstanding achievements clearly setting the unit above all others. These achievements include those of national or international significance, combat operations or military operations involving conflict with or exposure to hostile actions by an opposing foreign force.

"I couldn't be more proud of the men and women who have worked hard day in and day out to bring this recognition to the 99th," said Col. Richard Boutwell, 99th ABW commander. "Not only is this award a direct reflection of the professionalism and dedication that takes place on Nellis Air Force Base, it demonstrates the impact each Airman can have on our overall success."

Throughout the period of award consideration, 99th ABW personnel exhibited team efforts worthy of the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award by providing precise logistical, medical and base operating support for approximately 12,000 assigned personnel, 100,000 dependents, retirees and civilian personnel as well as 489,000  temporary duty assignment personnel annually.

"To me, an [Air Force] Outstanding Unit Award is something that everyone should be proud of to wear on their chest, because it shows you are a part of a winning team," said Chief Master Sgt. Steven Cleveland, 99th ABW command chief.

Additionally, the 99th ABW expertly executed approximately 700 missions through Air Combat Command's busiest air terminal. The wing's efforts successfully resulted in the movement of more than 3,000 tons of cargo as well as more than 10,000 passengers.

Also during this span, the wing further demonstrated its deservedness of the award when it provided approximately 2,700 Airmen with valuable training at the Air Force's largest security forces training center. The training consisted of more than 200,000 man-hours during 10 courses, providing well equipped and ready deployers to combatant commanders worldwide.

The 99th ABW also successfully enabled the generation of more than 6,000 sorties for 200-plus combat units and eight nations during 17 Red Flag and Green Flag exercises.

These are only a few highlights of the, around-the-clock efforts wing personnel put in to bring this award to the 99th ABW team.

"Everyone and every accomplishment in this piece of paper are significant," said Cleveland, "Some people think because they do not have an achievement medal is a measure of them. To me, look a little further down that ribbon rack and look for those outstanding unit awards. Those are what really should mean something, because we're a team."
