Airmen living in the dorms received cookies from the Nellis Area Spouse's Club, Nellis and Creech Leadership Spouses and the Nellis Commissary, which were handed out by the first sergeants Dec. 8, 2014.

"For Airmen living in the dorms, it can be hard being away from their families during the holiday season," said Tammy Whiting, organizer of the cookie drive and wife of Brig. Gen. Stephen Whiting, U.S. Air Force Warfare Center vice commander. "It's important to let them know that we appreciate them and everything they do. We don't want them to feel like they've been forgotten about during the holidays."

Organizations around the base donated cookies and volunteered to make cookie that were delivered to dorm residents.

The goal for the 2014 cookie drive was to get at least 15,000 cookies donated, so that each Airmen would receive 15 to 18 cookies on their tray.

Although the exact number of cookies received for the drive is unknown, Whiting said they surpassed their goal from last year and more cookies were donated from the local community.

Airmen that were at work during the cookie delivery returned to their room and found the cookies on their desks or beds.

"I was really surprised when I walked into my room and noticed that I had been given cookies and a card," said Airman 1st Class Melanie Perleberg, a Women's Health Clinic medical technician. "Not everybody is able to spend the holidays with their family, so it's nice to know that people are thinking about us and trying to make the holiday season better for us."
