Large-scale flying exercise kicks off Monday

Southern Nevada residents may notice an increase in military aircraft activity starting Monday and continuing through Nov. 2 as another large scale flying exercise, Red Flag, takes place here.

Red Flag is a realistic combat training exercise involving the air forces of the United States and its allies, and is conducted on the vast Nevada Test and Training Range, north of Las Vegas. Red Flag is one of a series of advanced training programs administered by the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center and Nellis, through the 414th Combat Training Squadron.

Flights involving approximately 97 aircraft from the MQ-1 Predator to the F-16 Fighting Falcon will be departing and returning to Nellis during the next few weeks.

Along with the Air Force, this Red Flag will involve multi-service and coalition aircraft ranging from the Army's CH-47 Chinook and Royal Norwegian Air Force's C-130H Hercules. The Royal Danish and Netherlands air forces will also be participating. These aircraft will be flying missions during the day and night to the Nellis range where they will simulate an air and ground war.
