Nellis takes next step toward privatized housing Published Dec. 5, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Ryan Whitney Nellis AFB Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- Nellis base housing residents may notice a significant change in day-to-day traffic beginning Dec. 10 when some roads in Manch Manor close due to construction throughout 2008. The roads will be closed completely to pedestrian traffic, but will remain open to motor vehicle traffic until Jan. 2. After Jan. 2, the roads will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicle traffic until December 2008. Portions of Salmon Drive, Deichalmann Drive, Kozak Drive, Strunk Parkway, Bartley Drive and Riggs Parkway, are scheduled to be closed, completely separating the northern part of Manch Manor from the southern portion. Access to the northern area of Manch Manor will only be available via the Hospital or Range Rd. gates. The Craig Road gate will be open 24-hours a day to accommodate southern Manch Manor residents unable to access their homes via the Hospital or Range Road gates. "We realize this is a big change for these families, so we're doing everything we can to make the transition as smooth as possible," said Debbie Perez, 99th Civil Engineer Squadron Housing Office flight chief. The Clark County School District is aware of the construction and has already relocated bus stops for children. Clark County schools are scheduled to send home a newsletter with children informing parents of the new bus stop location. This information can also be viewed on the internet at www.nellisfamilyhousing.com. "We looked at every possible scenario to prevent separating Manch Manor, but the work that has to be done made that impossible," Ms. Perez said. The reason the roads will be shut down is the size and degree of the various construction projects being held in this area for the next year. All underground infrastructures, roads and sidewalks will be replaced, she continued. This street reconfiguration within Manch Manor is part of the first of five housing privatization construction phases. As construction is completed in this area, it will progress into older areas of Manch Manor. "Although these changes will at first appear as inconveniences, when all is said and done, the residents will be very happy with what we have done," Ms. Perez said. Some community features slated to be available after construction is completed are basketball courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, a swimming pool, a splash park, a soccer field, a new community center and a housing maintenance facility. The new junior non-commissioned officer housing will be 1,507 sq. ft. bigger than the current company-grade officer housing, with each housing area receiving similar upgrades. Construction in this area is scheduled to be completed and roads reopened in December of 2008. All housing privatization construction phases are scheduled to be completed by 2012.
