The 57th Equipment Maintenance Squadron Ammo defeated the 99th Logistics Readiness Squadron, 73-63, to win the Nellis 2008 intramural basketball championship, Feb. 27.

Ammo, who was second seed in the Western Division, earned a spot in the title game by upsetting the Eastern Division regular season champion, the 57th Operations Support Squadron, in the semi-finals.

In the championship game, Ammo jumped out to an early lead, thanks to some long-range 3-pointers. The 99th LRS answered with Airman Herman Atkins' hot hand, also from 3-point land.

Ammo, riding the solid play on both ends of the court by Staff Sgt. Gregory Wilson, ended the first half with a 10-0 run to grab a 43-31 lead at the break.

The second half was more of the same as Ammo's Staff Sgt. Ulises Sanchez scored 14 points to help seal the win. Defensively, Ammo shut down the 99th LRS' fast break, slowing things down. The slow down game enabled Ammo to use their size advantage to dominate the boards on both ends of the court.

Seven different players scored for Ammo, with Sergeant Wilson leading all scorers with 26 points.
