'Thunderstruck' claims Nellis Bowling Championship Published June 2, 2008 By Tech. Sgt. Mark Mackenzie 57th Component Maintenance Squadron NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The 57th AMXS intramural bowling team Thunderstruck earned the title of base champions at the Nellis 300 Bowling Center here May 21. The bowling center hosted a double-elimination tournament with the best teams from Wednesday and Thursday intramural leagues. The tournament began May 13, with team Thunderstruck winning five straight tournament brackets. Their closest match came in the finals with a narrow 3148-3124 victory over the tournament runner-up, the 547th Intelligence Squadron. 547th IS was undefeated for three brackets, but lost a semi-final match to Thunderstruck. After battling through a tight loser-bracket finals match, 547 IS sought revenge with a rematch opportunity. Thunderstruck edged out Intel in a dramatic three-game series. 547 IS team captain James Truman started the third game with strikes in the first six frames. His seventh frame was a strong shot, but one single pin refused to fall. From then on, momentum shifted and Thunderstruck closed out the victory and the base championship. Thunderstruck finished as installation runner-up last year, so this victory carried additional sentiment. Mr. Robert Catanzano, a Nellis 300 representative, summed up this year's tournament. "It was an exciting two weeks," said Mr. Catanzano. "We had a lot of very good bowling and several close matches. The level of competition was very high." Team Thunderstruck is comprised of Mrs. Victoria Sims, Master Sgt. David Sims, Tech. Sgt. Christopher Guy, Staff Sgt. Casey Harris, Edwin "E.C." Chamberlayne and anchored by Airman 1st Class Jason Lucas.
