The groundbreaking ceremony for construction of a water reclamation facility was held Jan. 29, on Carey Avenue just south of Nellis Air Force Base.

The City of North Las Vegas, with cooperation from Nellis AFB began construction of the new facility in November at a site which was previously part of the Nellis AFB golf course.

The Air Force is leasing a 41-acre parcel to the city. Under this leasing agreement, the city paid the Air Force $25 Million which will be used to renovate and expand the Nellis fitness center. The water reclamation facility will also provide the water to irrigate Nellis' golf course until 2036.

"I think it's going to be a great benefit to the Nellis community and for the people that use the gym," said Joseph DiRosario, the Deputy for installation support Nellis AFB. "We're about 80,000 square-feet short of what we're authorized in terms of gym space so we'll have a bigger and more modern gym. It [The gym expansion] will have a swimming pool inside, an indoor-running track, weight rooms and aerobic areas."

The project is also expected to boost economic development in North Las Vegas and extend Southern Nevada's water resources. The construction of the facility will create approximately 500 jobs and be capable of treating 25 million gallons of waste-water per day.

"Nellis AFB is honored to participate in a project that will help our local community and improve Southern Nevada's water resources," said Col. David Belote, 99th Air Base Wing commander. "We look forward to the construction and completion of this facility and the benefits it will bring to our community and the Air Force in the months and years to come."
