Contractors in the workplace Published Oct. 22, 2009 By George Salton 99th Contracting Squadron NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- Contractors have become an integral part of daily government activities. Many contractors work side by side with military and government employees, consequently making it difficult to distinguish between contractors and civil service employees in the workplace. Government employees must remember contract employees are not government employees. Contractors do not enjoy the same privileges or maintain the same credentials that civilian employees possess. Contractor employee status and regulations are different, and contractors should always bear identifiable insignia, such as organizational nametags, business logos or company badges. By identifying contractors in the workplace and understanding their boundaries, the government can ensure that damaging issues, including release of advance procurement information for unfair advantage, disclosure of source selection information and authorization of unofficial work will be avoided.
