AMMOS graduates 21st class at Nellis Published Oct. 20, 2010 By Capt. Joshua DePaul U.S. Air Force Advanced Maintenance and Munitions Officer School NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The U.S. Air Force Advanced Maintenance and Munitions Officer School Class 10B graduated its 21st class at a ceremony at the Nellis Club Oct. 15. Mid-level captains from various maintenance and munitions units across the Air Force applied to attend the AMMOS. Five students were selected as graduates and will go back to their units to produce, instruct, and advise others in all aspects of effects-based logistics. The U.S. Air Force AMMOS was developed as a result of a need for mid-level logistics officers to have enhanced logistics knowledge similar to what operators receive from the United States Air Force Weapons School. AMMOS' primary goal is to make operational wings more effective by producing highly skilled logistics officers that expand combat capability by serving as producers of combat airpower, instructors of their peers and subordinates, and advisors to wing and major command leadership. In Dec. 2000, the 57th Wing was directed to develop an integration plan for incorporating logistics officer training into the U.S. Air Force Weapons School. In Jun. 2002, former Air Force Chief of Staff General John P. Jumper, then commander of Air Combat Command, approved the "stand up" of the Advanced Maintenance and Munitions Officer School at Nellis AFB, as a part of the 57th Wing. Since its start in 2002 as a 19-week advanced warfighting course, AMMOS has provided maintenance and munitions officers with advanced combat logistics training which can be applied both at home and at deployed locations. The first class of 12 students, comprised of aircraft maintenance, munitions, logistics planners, and supply officers graduated in Jun. 2003. In Oct. 2002, the Air Force realigned logistics functions at the wing level. Aircraft maintenance and munitions officers now attend a 15-week course called USAF AMMOS. The 15-week investment has taught these five students the leadership, critical thinking and operational skills needed to build a firm foundation for their future endeavors.
