It's no secret the failure rate for physical training tests has increased under the new requirements. The Nellis Health and Wellness Center has begun a new program to improve the fitness of Nellis Airmen and give a boost to those who are having trouble with the new test.

The new Coaching Program is open to all active-duty Airmen and is designed to fit each individual's personal fitness needs.

"The program has been put together to address individuals who are struggling, on profile, or have had injuries in the past," said Gabriela Regino-Colby, the fitness specialist charged with running the day-to-day operations of the program. "I'm basically providing them with a structured plan that has been put together by a professional, so I'm taking the guess work away from the member. I am taking their excuses away because it is expected that they will be sore -- that's the nature of the beast, so get over it. We are dealing with it throughout the program and it has been planned that way."

Each session goes through a series of stages, from warm-up to workout.

"We start the session with foam rolling to work on tissue quality," Ms. Regino-Colby said. "Next we execute a dynamic warm-up which includes corrective strategies for each individual that otherwise wouldn't have been addressed if they were training on their own. From there we take them through a structured strength training program and finish it up with a nice burnout to kick it up a notch."

For the many who find it difficult to stay motivated, using a personal trainer has several advantages. Trainers can provide motivation, professional experience and personalized attention. A good personal trainer should be aware of the latest research in fitness and health and may also introduce new types of exercises that may work better than ones used in the past.

"Every day that I get to come here I'm excited," said Airman Amanda Bunting of the 58th Rescue Squadron. "This is the first time I have ever been excited about working out. She really puts you to work, but it doesn't hurt you or ruin your enthusiasm. The next day you're a little sore, but you're ready to do it again, so I love it"

The HAWC offers morning and afternoon classes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. There is a class on Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. For more information, call the Health and Wellness Center at 652-3381.
