For the past 15 years, the Angel Tree program has sponsored approximately 3,500 foster children across the United States each Christmas. Program participants are given a child's name, age, gender, and his or her Christmas wish list, with recommendations costing up to $50. "Every kid should be able to have a Christmas," Said Staff Sgt. William Mello, from the 820th Red Horse combat engineer unit. Sergeant Mello was able to get approximately a hundred other Airmen from his unit involved with program, and together, they collected more than 200 gifts for 100 foster children. The unit as a group has supported the Angel Tree program in the past, in addition to Toys for Tots and Three Square. "At Red Horse we build things, from buildings and bridges to whatever is needed," said Sergeant Mello. "With this, we're building lives." The gifts collected by the 820th, along with the other gifts donated to the Angel Tree Program, will be distributed in Las Vegas Dec. 17.
