HAWC strives to improve lifestyles Published Feb. 17, 2011 By Airman 1st Class Cynthia A. Haughton Nellis Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- Many factors go into total well-being, and the Nellis Health and Wellness Center offers a wide variety of programs and activities to help Nellis personnel achieve their personal goals. "The mission of the HAWC is to maintain and improve the physical, social and mental well-being of the Nellis community," said Laura Weart, HAWC director. The HAWC aims to improve wellness through fitness, nutrition, tobacco cessation, stress management, substance abuse and other preventive programs which are available to all active duty, dependents, retirees and civilian employees. The HAWC also offers a running clinic, strength training, spin classes, relaxation therapy, professional massage therapy, personal training and group coaching sessions. A common misconception associated with the HAWC is that it is only for individuals who are struggling with their physical fitness, but Ms. Weart was quick to clarify. "Everyone is welcome to work out here," she said. "We have every kind of program for fitness and nutrition to help people improve physically and mentally." Another avenue the HAWC provides to help and encourage individuals on their road to total well-being is their Facebook page. "Our Facebook page has a lot of information on health and nutrition, and even offers videos to help individuals learn new exercise techniques," Ms. Weart said. "People can also post questions relating to health and wellness, and they are answered by our staff." The HAWC, located in Building 340, next to the satellite pharmacy and mental health, is open weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information about the Nellis HAWC, call 653-3375 or look for them on Facebook under "Nellis Health and Wellness Center."
