The 99th Air Base Wing is hosting a free Automated External Defibrillator Awareness Rodeo April 7 at the Nellis Fitness Center to promote the importance of public access defibrillation. Training will occur in 30 minute sessions between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The rodeo will provide an opportunity for base personnel and their families to learn how to use an AED and to practice the new approved "hands-only" training designed by the American Heart Association.

This training includes teaching the chain-of-survival, which is a sequence of steps a person should take when responding to an unresponsive person.

The steps of this chain-of-survival are:

1) Check the person for unresponsiveness.

2) If person is unresponsive, activate emergency response by calling 9-1-1 and obtaining a nearby AED device.

3) If person remains unresponsive, begin performing chest compressions while someone else retrieves the AED device.

4) Attach AED device to unresponsive person's chest as soon as possible. The AED device will advise if the unresponsive person needs to be shocked.

5) Continue to follow the AED's instructions until trained help arrives.

The goal of this rodeo is to educate as many people as possible about the AED device so that anyone can provide assistance in an emergency situation. For more information about PAD, AED devices or the upcoming Awareness Rodeo, contact Tech. Sgt. DeAndre Scott at deandre.scott@nellis.af.mil.
