Anyone conducting a Permanent Change of Station move should take the following steps to make the moving process go as smoothly as possible.

First: Obtain orders for the PCS move as soon as possible.

Second: Go to www.move.mil and register for the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) to start the PCS moving process as soon as possible. Registering on this website requires information from one's orders. DPS provides the following benefits:
-The ability to self-counsel and submit one's application online, instead of traveling to a Transportation Office.
-The ability to track one's shipment through DPS or Interactive Voice Response.
-The option to file a claim online, and to settle directly with one's moving company, called a Transportation Service Provider.
-Full Replacement Value of lost and damaged goods, as opposed to depreciated value offered in the past.
-The opportunity to make sure only quality, reputable companies handle and ship one's personal belongings by completing the Customer Satisfaction Survey.

Third: Complete the self-counseling portion of DPS as soon as possible. Upon completion, the system will generate Defense Department Forms 1299 and 1797.

Fourth: Bring both DD Forms and two copies of orders to the Traffic Management Office at least 30 days prior to the requested pack dates. Due to a high volume of moves during the summer, moving companies will only accept any shipments with a minimum of a 30 day notification.
