Grilling becomes more and more popular throughout the summer and can be a great way to reconnect with old friends or be with family. Whether a charcoal or propane grill is being used, it is always important to be cautious and to remember to practice safe grilling.

When using a charcoal grill, lighter fluid should only be used to light the coals. Once the coals are lit, discontinue use and store the lighter fluid in a safe place away from the grill. Charcoal grills can be known to flare up, so it is important to dress properly and not wear baggy clothing that could easily catch fire. Before disposal of used coals after grilling, soak them with water to remove all the heat.

Before using a propane grill, check for leaks in the cylinder and hose assembly. To do this, apply a light soap and water solution to the hose or cylinder, turn the cylinder on and look for bubbling areas. If you see any bubbles, shut off the propane and don't use open flames in the area. The grill should be serviced by a certified technician before being used again. If the leak continues, contact a local fire department. If there is ever a suspicion of a gas leak, especially if the scent of gas is present, get away from the grill immediately and contact a local fire department.

The most important thing to remember is to never grill indoors and stay 10 feet away from a building. Being in an enclosed or semi-enclosed area while grilling can cause serious harm because of the carbon monoxide emitted from the grill. It is also imperative to be aware of the surrounding environment. It can be easy for the heat from the grill to catch combustible items on fire, therefore, always remember to keep a fire extinguisher within reach. Once the grill cools completely, store it at least 10 feet from a house or building.

Staying vigilant this summer and taking the time for safety precautions can keep serious mishaps from occurring and provide for a fun, safe time for friends and family.
