Nellis Fire Department holds annual fire muster Published Oct. 19, 2011 By Airman 1st Class Whitney Jackson Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The Nellis Fire Department held its fifth annual fire muster Oct. 14, 2011, at Freedom Park on Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. The purpose of the fire muster is for squadrons to come together and to compete against each other in support of fire prevention week. Four teams from different squadrons around the base came out to compete in the fire muster. The teams included the 99th Logistics Readiness Squadron, the 99th Air Base Wing Legal Office, the 99th ABW Public Affairs Photo Lab and the 57th Maintenance Squadron Precision Measurement Equipment Lab. "We try to get people out here to promote fire prevention week," said Senior Airman Xavier Farms, fire department driver operator. "Safety is always our number one priority." The event included an obstacle course, fire hose relay, bucket brigade, fire truck pull and the fire hose tug-a-war. During each event in the fire muster, two teams competed against each other to try and finish first. Once one team beat the other, the next two teams would compete. The winning teams from each primary round would go head-to-head to find the overall winner for each event. The team who won the most challenges, won the fire muster. "The teams come out to compete, but the competition helps boost morale and bring the different shops together," said Airman 1st Class Hunter Minter, fire department driver operator. "The different challenges are part of what we do on a day-to-day basis and show everyone some of the scenarios we have to go through to train." At the end of the competition, the judges tallied up the scores and announced the winners while all the teams, supporters and family members ate lunch. The PMEL shop came in first place with a total of 44 points, followed by the legal office with 42 points, LRS with 32 points and the photo lab with 22 points.
