Call for 2012 Tax Center volunteers Published Nov. 15, 2011 By Capt. Justin Haselden Nellis Legal Office NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The Nellis Legal Office needs help staffing the 2012 Tax Centers for Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases. Each year, the Nellis and Creech Tax Centers assist retirees, military families and Airmen from Nellis, Creech and the Nevada Test and Training Range by preparing tax returns free of charge. Last year, the Tax Centers prepared more than 2,000 tax returns, which was more than any other tax-preparer in Las Vegas. Despite the immense amount of work done, the Tax Centers operate almost completely by volunteers. Active duty members, retirees and dependents more than 18 years old are eligible to volunteer at the Tax Centers. This year, the Tax Centers need 50 part-time volunteers to staff its operation fully. Of these, 45 are for the Nellis Tax Center and five are for the Creech Tax Center. At a minimum, each of the 50 volunteers will need to commit to one four-hour shift per week throughout the tax season, which runs from Jan. 17, 2012 to April 15, 2012. (Alternatively, the entire Tax Center program could run with eight full-time volunteers.) The Nellis Legal Office will provide one week of free tax training to all volunteers Dec. 12-16, 2011, at Nellis. This training is critical and required for all volunteers. Volunteers must sign up by Dec. 2, 2011, to ensure placement in the training class. Without the necessary number of volunteers, the Tax Centers will not be able to provide the level of service that they have in the past. If necessary, the Tax Centers may have to scale back operations and restrict services to junior enlisted Airmen. Please help in staffing the Tax Centers so that each and every eligible military member, dependent and retiree can take advantage of this free service. This is a great opportunity to help our military community. All volunteers will receive a certificate and commander's luncheon as tokens of appreciation. Anyone interested in volunteering should stop by the Nellis Legal Office to pick up a volunteer application form or send an email to justin.haselden@nellis.af.mil.
