Legal office assists service members, spouses with vehicle registrations Published Feb. 25, 2013 By Staff Sgt. Tiffany Austin United States Air Force Warfare Center NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The Nellis Air Force Base Legal Office offers a variety of services to active duty members, reservists, retirees and their families. One of those services is assisting active duty members and their spouses renew vehicle registrations. In Nevada, out-of-state residents who are active-duty in the military and their spouses are not required to register their vehicles in state. Should service members choose to obtain a Nevada registration however, they are eligible for an exemption from all governmental taxes associated with its registration. In order to obtain this exemption, service members must submit a Non-Resident, Active Duty Military Governmental Services Tax Exemption Affidavit or "VP 203," along with a Leave and Earnings Statement dated within the previous 30 days. If only the spouses name appears on the vehicle registration, a Non-Resident Military Spouse Governmental Services Tax Exemption Affidavit or "VP 203S," must be submitted instead. Both the VP 203 and VP203S forms can be found at the Nellis Legal office or on the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicle website. Members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and other foreign forces are not eligible for this exemption and must pay the full registration fees. Due to a spike in deployment requirements a number of service members have been paying late fees due to a registration that expires while the member is gone. However, these penalty fees are no longer applicable to certain service members. In 2011, the Nevada State Legislature passed a measure to waive registration late fees for active duty military members assigned to combat or combat support positions. Airmen are encouraged to see the legal office for eligibility upon return from deployment status.
