Community steps up to support military spouses Published May 14, 2013 By By Caitlin Kenney 99th Air Base Wing Public Affairs NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- Military spouses, men and women, young and old, are there to welcome their service members home from deployment and support them throughout their military career. Nellis and the surrounding community came together May 10 at The Club to celebrate these amazing spouses and their families' sacrifices as part of Military Spouse Appreciation Day. According to Jenna Lightfoot, airman and family readiness center community readiness consultant, President Ronald Regan established Military Spouse Appreciation Day in 1984 in recognition of their importance to the military. This year's event had a cruise theme titled "Fantastic Voyage" and showcased dance lessons, tropical drinks, a vacation themed cake, and a live disc jockey. There were also about 70 door prizes to give away, donated by community sponsors of the event, as well as makeup demonstrations, a photo booth, and free food. The event was advertised as a night to drop in, take advantage of the entertainment, and leave when you want. After the doors opened at 6 p.m., most spouses stayed to watch each new event, whether it was hula or Zumba dance demonstrations, receive door prizes or just to spend more time out with friends. Having the Nellis community host this event made spouses feel appreciated and part of the Air Force family. "It's very welcoming as far as for new [families], especially getting to know each other," said Staff Sgt. Melissa Jones, 926th Force Support Squadron knowledge operations management. "I think it's cool. They have the finger foods and the raffle," said Senior Master Sgt. Sommer Noethlich, 99th Security Forces Squadron. "It feels good, [to be appreciated] and its right around the same weekend as Mother's Day. They really take good care of the women and the spouses here." Military Spouse Appreciation Day takes one day out of the year to show appreciation for those spouses who stand beside their service member and bring to the military a touch of love and support. This event was a symbol of the military's continued promise to take care of military families and support them throughout the years.
