Tabatha McCarthy NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nevada -- An adult Great Basin Rattlesnake coils in the rocks on a hillside at the Nellis Test and Training Range, Nevada, Oct. 17, 2019. According to Colorado State University herpetologists, rattlesnake bites are often as a warning and rarely fatal. Their venom is used to subdue their prey, not used as a defense mechanism.
