7/7/2006 - NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- A new Reserve squadron was activated at Nellis during a ceremony at the Officers' Club June 30.

The 78th Reconnaissance Squadron, "Bushmasters," replaced the 307th Fighter Squadron, Detachment 3, located in the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center.

The actual activation order for the change was May 19.

"With the activation of this new squadron our Reserve members will be able to provide ready resources to assist the active units within the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center," said Master Sgt. Theresa Kennedy, information manager for the 78th RS. "Many of us will be able to provide direct support to the War on Terrorism."

"The new activation basically makes us more accessible to the active-duty squadrons here at Nellis," said Col. David Culbertson, commander of the 78th RS.

The change is the result of the 2006 Program Objective Memorandum (budget) increasing the Air Force Reserve participation in Nellis' total force integration program from 21 to 120 members.

When it was here, the 307th FS, Det. 3, was Air Force Reserve Command's associate detachment manned by fighter aircraft instructor pilots, sensor operators and maintainers put there to amplify the skill levels of the active-duty squadrons in the USAFWC.

With the new 78th RS activation, they will now provide highly experienced and skilled, combat-ready citizen airmen charged to execute the missions of the USAFWC, according to the 78th's official mission statement.

"The increased numbers required a squadron-sized unit to provide administrative support," said Colonel Culbertson.
