NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- There are many beautiful places to hike in southern Nevada. For example, Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire provide miles of trails with differing difficulty levels so hikers of all abilities can experience the trails. But hiking comes with its own share of risks and it's important to be aware of them to keep from finding yourself in a dangerous situation. The next time you plan on hiking, remember these tips so that your trip is enjoyable and safe.

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Hiking can dehydrate you quickly. Always carry enough water with you so you can navigate the trail and not run out. Do not drink water from streams or rivers unless you boil or filter the water first. Streams and rivers tend to contain microorganisms, such as bacteria, which may be fatal.

2. Wear appropriate gear. Rugged, over-the-ankle hiking boots will stabilize and protect your ankles from injuries. Your clothing should protect you from any insects and poisonous plants that you might encounter on the trail.

3. Know the weather. Before leaving for a hike, check the weather of the area where you will be. Beware of the possibility of flash flooding. Flash flooding comes without warning and mostly occurs in low-laying areas.

4. Do not hike alone. This is one of the most important tips. Always take a partner with you; in the event anything unexpected occurs, the other person can notify emergency services, direct them to your whereabouts and give them information on your condition. You should also notify someone who is not hiking with you of where you will be going, in case something should happen to both you and your hiking partner.

So, whether you are planning a big hike up a mountain or just an afternoon jaunt, remember these simple tips: take plenty of water, wear the right shoes and clothing, know the weather conditions and do not go alone.
