Second year continues with advancing responsibilities, which includes supervising medical students and interns. Once again, the year is broken up into 13 blocks of four weeks each:
3.5 blocks are inpatient medicine (1 with FMR staff, 1 on night float, 1 with Sunrise Nursery/Late term NICU, two weeks ICU medicine at nearby UMC hospital)
0.5 blocks are in Gyn clinic
0.5 blocks in Sports Med
1 block in Peds clinic
1 block is in FMR procedure clinics
1 block of elective
In addition, subspecialty learning blocks are required, which are typically 0.5 month each. Current blocks include:
Nephrology
Mental Health (one month)
Dermatology
Endocrinology
Urology
Cardiology
Pulmonary
Surgical subspecialties (one month)
Pediatric Emergency medicine (Sunrise)
You will be in 3-5 traditional FMR clinic half days per week, and spend the remaining half day per week in teaching conferences, quality improvement projects, nursing home visits, admin, or research project time. You get one week of paid CME if in good academic standing to pursue an Area of Concentration.
Other than night float, the only planned overnight call occurs once weekly on Family Medicine inpatient (typically four weekends during second year).
All senior residents will be assigned 2 or more long-term continuity nursing home patients at a nearby nursing home. You will visit each patient once monthly and write continuity notes over the course of your final 2 years of training.
