Airmen are reminded to wear a life jacket while operating or riding on personal watercraft to help increase their risk of survival in case of an emergency. According to the Personal Flotation Device Manufacturers Association, nine out of ten drowning’s occur in inland waters, most within a few feet of safety and involving boats under 20 feet long. Most drowning victims also had a life jacket available and chose not to wear it. Airmen should not drink and operate personal watercraft and can be charged for driving under the influence or speeding while out on the water.
